It is secreted from the pineal gland in response to darkness which conveys to the brain that it is time to go to bed.🌙😴
Mind you it is produced in picograms, and we use it in milligrams!
Melatonin is the primary medication for insomnia as per AAFP ( American Academy of Family Physicians) even though it is not FDA approved.
Best indications would be;
Any circadian rhythm issues such as jetlag, night work, when other lifestyle modifications don’t help, aging-related sleep issues, some neurodegenerative diseases…
Ideally better used briefly and at low doses….
Melatonin interferes with the immune system –> upregulates Th2 which may increase the risk of RA (rheumatoid arthritis)
When used in long term, it is noted to adversely affect fertility in men; also has Central Nervous System side effects- drowsiness etc
